Congratulations to Jaye Herrod, Miss Wiregrass Area 2010

Jaye, a native of Prattville, is a graduate of the University of Mobile and is the music teacher at Saraland Elementary School.  She plans to begin pursuing her Masters in music education in the spring. 

Jaye’s passion for her platform Character First began at a young age as her parents taught her the value of making wise decisions.  Jaye believes the solution for many of our nation’s problems is character development at every level – from children to adults.  Therefore she has devoted thousands of hours to the promotion of this platform in many communities around the state.   

She created a Character Rock Music Packet for classroom teachers to promote character.  This packet is designed to spotlight one character trait per month using a character trait song set to a familiar tune.  There are nine character traits in the first series (enough for one school year), and she is currently working on a second series.  One of her goals is to distribute this packet to classroom teachers around the Wiregrass region during her year of service. 

In her classes at school, Jaye not only uses her Character Rock Packet, but she also recognizes and rewards good character.  Students at Saraland Elementary School strive to show good character so that they can become a member of her character club.  

Jaye was recognized for her community service as a Mobile Heart of Gold 2007 nominee.  She also received the Presidential Service Award in 2007 (Silver) and 2008 (Gold).
